When

When” is a story about when it’s time to say when.

Mahalo to Professor Tyler McMahon and his team for giving this story a home in Hawai’i Pacific Review.

"When" by Scott Solomon in Hawai'i Pacific Review is a story about when it's time to say when.

2025 James River Writers Conference

I attended the 2025 James River Writers Conference in Richmond, Virginia.

Along with Angie Kim’s keynote address regarding writing later in life, there were many notable panels, including the art of revision (Kris Spisak, Kate McKean, Heather Osborn, Leslye Penelope), publishing paths (Bill Blume, Leslye Penelope, Vanessa Riley, R.R. Virdi), the art of the pitch (Julie Valerie, Elizabeth Becker, Jessica Felleman), agents & authors (Patty Smith, Angie Kim, Kate McKean, Jade Wong-Baxter), and finding a literary community (Dae Newman, Rosa Castellano, Brynn Markham, Tony Keith Jr). With respect to the latter panel, I found the luncheon on Sunday to be quite conducive to making new friends.

Best of the Net Nomination

Along with many fine writers and artists, I am honored that my story, “To Whom Much Is Given,” has been nominated by Tom Dooley, editor of Eclectica, for the Best of the Net anthology.

Literacy Ills

In the United States of America, literacy ills affect more than the prospects of writers seeking readers. Above all, literacy ills affect us all.

Aspects of Narration

Aspects of Narration applies E. M. Forster’s Aspects of the Novel to a novel (The Flicker of Old Dreams by Susan Henderson), a memoir (We Are Too Many by Hannah Pittard), an essay, and a short story.

Ode to Short Pump

In Scott Solomon’s Writing News, “Ode to Short Pump” looks back at a once-rural area of Virginia that inspired one of my published stories.

Scott Solomon’s Writing News

I am thrilled to launch a Substack. By way of Scott Solomon’s Writing News, I intend to delve into craft, literature, fiction, nonfiction, books, novels, stories, essays, flash, and more.

My first stack, “Hello, World,” pays homage to Elaine Palencia and her Red Herring Fiction Workshop, through which I learned how to write.

To Whom Much Is Given

Alongside an assemblage of stellar writers and artists, I am honored to have a story published in Eclectica.

To Whom Much Is Given” explores the expectations eroding a millennial’s well-being.

Thank you, Tom Dooley, for fighting the good fight as Eclectica’s editor since 1996.

2024 James River Writers Conference

I attended the 2024 James River Writers Conference in my hometown.

There were many notable panels, including the state of publishing (Melanie Figueroa, Rachel Kahan, Rebecca Schinsky), the author/agent relationship (Rachel Beck, Lyn Liao Butler, Rachel Kahan), and finding a literary community (Courtney LeBlanc, DaNika Neblett Robinson, Zachary Steele).

With respect to the latter panel, I found the luncheons on Saturday and Sunday to be very conducive to making new friends.

The Fray

Thank you, Benjamin Drevlow and Bull, for publishing “The Fray,” a story of mine delving into the perils of involuntary commitment to a substandard mental health facility.
